Work experience during university aims to give the student an environment in which to practice what they had learnt. Therefore, you should try to choose carefully. Some courses require compulsory work experience during university (eg, engineering) but from what you said, your course probably doesn't have such a requirement. However, I would recommend going for work experience as it will help you make some money during your holidays, and at the same time, you can try out for yourself (without risk) whether you enjoy that particular job or industry. This will give you a better idea of what you want to do upon graduation. Work experience will also allow you to build contacts outside of university for use when you leave school. All in all, it is a very good use of your time.
As for difference in length of work experience, of course employers will consider a longer work experience more favourably than a shorter one. However, also bear in mind that you will be a fresh graduate, so your prospective employer will not place too much emphasis on whether you had 2 years or only 1 semester of work exp beforehand. Just make sure you perform well in your studies and if you have had work exp, get a good referee. This will help more.

MRC Clinical Trials Unit Senior Statistician/Research Scientist /Oncology Clinical Fellow Salary range £40,037 – £48,016 per annum inclusive of location allowances The Cancer Group of the MRC CTU is looking for high calibre individuals who wish to further their interest in clinical trials. Applicants with a background in medicine, epidemiology or statistics are encouraged to apply. The main focus of research is the conduct of large oncology Phase III randomised-controlled trials. Applicants will have responsibility for the day to day running of trials within the CTU and will gain experience of all aspects of clinical trials including design, regulatory requirements, trial management, analysis and publication. Senior Statistician applicants will additionally be responsible for all statistical aspects of the trials, working with a junior statistician. Training including undertaking an MSc in Clinical Trials is available. For clinical applicants options exist either for a permanent position or a 2-3 year clinical fellowship. The fellowship would ideally suit applicants with either MRCP/FRCS or equivalent experience in another discipline and preferably a national training number. An interest in urological/gynaecological/gastrointestinal oncology would be an advantage but the portfolio of work could be developed to match the interests of the individual. There would be the opportunity to carry out a project that could be developed into an MD or PhD degree. For non-clinical applicants a MSc or PhD in Statistics and/or Epidemiology is required and 3-5 years relevant experience. Good interpersonal skills, ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment and accurate and concise writing skills are required.
